Featured Interview with Andrew Bridgeforth, D.C.

Featured Interview W-Q: Chiropractic has been around for over 100 years, how do you think that chiropractic has changed in that time and how are your services different from other chiropractic services?

(Dr. Andrew Bridgeforth): For years, chiropractors were seen as general spine doctors. The current trend I see is for more specialization. There are chiropractors that focus on victims of auto accidents, some see patients with work related injuries, others are low back and disc specialists, and a growing number of chiropractors, like myself, specialize in Functional Medicine.

Q: What is Functional Medicine?

(Dr. Andrew Bridgeforth): Functional Medicine looks at all of the systems of the body and how they interact with one another. More specifically it is considered NeuroEndocrine Immunology. We look at the interactions between a person’s nervous system, their hormones and their immune system to figure out why they are sick.

Q: How do you look at these interactions?

(Dr. Andrew Bridgeforth): I use laboratory testing including blood tests, saliva tests and stool tests to get a more complete picture of what is going on in your body. Many doctors simply don’t check enough biomarkers to see what is going on in your body, and the ones that they do check, the ranges they use are way to general.

Q: What's your philosophy in regards to health and prevention?

(Dr. Andrew Bridgeforth): The absence of symptoms is not a sign of health. Many people believe that if they do the latest diet or cleanse and it makes them feel better, they are healthier. If my low oil light is on in my car, and I pour in some water where the oil should go, will the light go off? Yes. The symptom, the oil light, is gone. But have I really dealt with the problem? No. As a matter of fact, I am making things much worse. Many people have sickness and disease because their body is not healthy enough to fight it, and there isn’t a special diet or a $50 bottle of “rare berry juice” that is going to fix it. It really comes down to getting your body working the way it was designed to. No shortcuts, no magic pills, just regaining proper function. Once this happens, you are on the road to recovery and health.
