I think it's the least risky to go ahead and immunize kids (although I'm no doctor). Just seems to make practical sense. If it were really bad to immunize kids the community wouldn't allow it to happen.
I am new to the forum but this got my attention. I have 2 small children and both have been immunized. I know there is alot of talk about it being linked to autism and this was a concern of mine as well. I did go ahead and get them immunized at my Dr.'s advice and they are fine. However, I understand the concern.
However, I want you all to consider this. Toxins in the homes and at schools are also being linked to autism as well as ADD. Studies have shown that removing toxic chemicals from our homes can improve the symptoms of autism, ADD, allergies, asthma and eczema in our families.
We are washing our babies hair with fermaldahyde. Hello!! So, I just think it is time we start to consider this as the reason that autism and other ailments are on the rise today.
I shop from a great store where I purchase all of my products from. They are completely safe and better for the environment. Not to mention....no longer poisoning my family or myself.
If you want me to tell you about them...just PM me and I'll get you the info.
I've not heard any good arguments for NOT immunizing children. They all seem to be based on anecdotal evidence, rather then scientific research. In places where parents are not immunizing children, almost extinct diseases are making a come back. Is the return of diseases like polio really worth it?

This is not a controversial issue. This is simply an issue of choice. Unfortunately people do not like risk. If there is a hint that some action may pose a risk people will be afraid to take any action. Even if unaction is riskier than action itself.
Evidence is clear:
1. Not vaccinating: infectious diseases (which effectively can be prevented by vaccination) do lead to severe complications (pneumonia, encephalitis, death)
2. Vaccinating: theoretical (unproven) risk of autism
The choice is yours. Having said all of that, there is an issue of anxiety (in parents) that have to be addressed. A good way to address it, I think, is good information.
personally i wouldn't vaccinate my child. i don't believe that it's necessary and it's not what nature intended. be informed before making this crucial decision to vaccinate your child.

Had you always felt this way? Generally people want to vaccinate their children. Even those who may not have children yet cannot imagine that children should not be without vaccinations.
It seems to me that there was a time when there were a few “standard” vaccinations that didn’t pose many risks or complications. I have a few questions…
1. When was the risk of Autism linked to vaccines?
2. When were additional vaccines added to the old standard MM&R
3. Were the newer vaccines introduced around the time the Autism studies were done?
4. Could the increase in population just be contributing to the increasing number of Autism diagnoses?
5. Are children just being diagnosed with Autism for a label?
I’m thinking I would rather risk my child having Autism than risk losing them to Polio or Rubella. I think if there is a link, it may be because of some of the more “recent” vaccines introduced over the years, I know several Autistic children, yet no adults. I wonder if it’s possible to select the vaccines your child can receive. Any thoughts or info on these questions?

I'd like to add a thought to that great post:
Often as we get better in disagnosing issues, we find more people with those issues. Often it's not that there are more people with those issues, it's just that we're getting better at finding those people and diagnosing them. This is always the flag that goes up when I hear people say things like, "We have more [insert medical condition here] then ever before!" It's possible that may be true, but it's also very difficult to prove when we have no reliable history of that condition.
Remember, it wasn't that long ago we were using leaches, and draining blood "to remove the evil spirits".
There's also the shady practice of drug companies giving a few unscrupulous doctors kick-back money for "finding" people with a condition that would require their prescription. There are for more kids labeled "ADD" then there are kids that actually have it.
Why do you think there are commercials for prescription drugs? There is NO reason in the world to have those commercials, because you can't go out and buy them. You HAVE to go to your doctor, get diagnosed, and get that prescription. Some people diagnose themselves and demand that drug, some people are diagnosed and given that drug. Either way, you're inflating the number of people falsely diagnosed.

Hello HealthNut,
The great thing is vaccinations are a choice, and whether someone chooses to vaccinate or not is fine by me. I don't have children yet, but when I do I will choose not to vaccinate because I believe in natural immunity rather than artificial immunity.
I suggest you read this article by Dr. Tim O'Shea. It is a brief summary of his book "The Sanctity of Human Blood: Vaccination is Not Immunization." Purchasing his book would be even better, but the article will give you a taste of why I choose not to vaccinate.
