My first visit to Dr. Vailas was uneventful. He is a skilled surgeon and easily diagnosed my osteoarthritis of the knee. He ordered an MRI and booked a follow-up visit to go over the results. On the follow-up visit I asked him to go over the MRI with me and explain the results. His answer, "They're not going to mean anything to you.You have osteoarthritis of the knee." I left the office without seeing them and in a state of confusion and anxiety. Only after I had time to think about the visit did I call the office back and ask for another visit where he took the time to explain the results. I also asked that I not be charged for that visit. Several days later I went back and resolved to get my questions answered. "Why are you here?" he asked. "I never did see the MRI which I paid for. At the very least I'd like to confirm that it is MY MRI and have you take the time to explain the results to me." "That's why you're here?" he asked exasperatedly. He then proceeded to take the time to explain the images to me and was surprised that I was familiar with the anatomy of the knee. He then somewhat apologized. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you knew as much as you do." (As if only knowledgeable patients deserve an explanation). He told me that I would need a medial compartmental knee replacement down the line and that I could try an interim measure of a knee debridement (clean out and smoothing of the ragged tissue.) Several months later I opted for the knee debridement. Before I went into surgery I Dr. Vailas came in to explain the procedure. As I was heavily medicated, I missed a lot of what he was telling me. I had scheduled a post surgical visit the following week. The next day I called the office and asked for Dr. Vailas to call me and go over the results of the surgery and explain to me what he did as I was quite anxious. I made at least 2 calls. He never called me back. When I went to his office for the post surgical visit, I had films of my knee. They looked like little circular snapshots. I asked him to explain them to me and his response was, "You'd have to go to medical school to understand these." The surgery did nothing to improve my situation (and Dr. Vailas did advise me that that was a possibility). He suggested that I try Synvisc injections. I advised him that I'm in the early stages of Parkinson's Disease. "How does having PD affect my treatment?" I asked. "It doesn't affect ME a bit." he replied. "I'm not talking about you, I'm talking about ME the patient." I said. I am very reluctant to return to Vailas because he lacks empathy. He has an excellent reputation -- but I would never go back. I resent his condescending attitude and believe that being a good doctor requires more than just being skilled with a knife.
