In 2009 I became concerned with a wart on my right index finger. Due to its location on my finger, I constantly irritated the area when performing simple tasks such as reaching into my pockets, opening doors, drawers, etc. I contacted Dr. Skaff and set up an appointment. Upon examination, Dr. Skaff determined to use a cold treatment in effort to 'kill' the seed associated with the wart deep under the skin. She also determined to take a biopsy of a mole near the center of my back.
Fortunately, I had insurance coverage and expected little out of pocket costs. The biopsy was negative, thankfully! The wart however, did not disappear and the bill I received for its attempted removal was astonishing! $180.00 dollars for an unsuccessful treatment! When I contacted Dr. Skaff's office, I asked if she would be providing me follow up care to pursue other ways of removing the wart and if I would be expected to pay another $180.00 to be treated? I also asked the office workers to have Dr. Skaff personally contact me, which she never did and never has to this day. I still have the wart on my finger and tried treating it with medicine purchased from Walgreen's. The wart was eaten away to skin level, however it is growing back again.
I decided to wait until I fully paid off the $180.00 fee, which I did so, before filing any complaints regarding Dr.Skaff's care. In her office, I asked why the fee was so costly for a wart removal. The office worker looked at me and said, "that is what insurance allows us to bill". I stated emphatically that I felt taken advantage of and that this is yet one more example of 'what is wrong with the healtcare system in the USA'. I took my receipt and left. I have since contacted the West Virgina Board of Medicine and am initiating a complaint directed at Dr. Skaff for not contacting me when requested to do so. I understand no doctor could ever be expected to know what an insurance company policy will and will not cover. Nor do I expect to see a price list of procedures. I do expect doctors to offer alternative treatment options and to call a patient back when asked to do so. Dr. Skaff has never contacted me personally to this day to hear my concerns. I am disappointed with the lack of bedside manner, lack of follow up and the overall service I did not receive from Dr. Skaff.

Sincerely,

Sean Richardson
