We moved into Seymour and my sister-in-law said this was an excellant vet. We took her recomendation (she has horses, cats, and dogs and all are seen here.) I was extremely surprised by their professional and personal care. I've never seen such a great animal/human oriented staff. It would be great if all vets and their staff could experience this atmosphere. They would learn so much.
When my collie was 19+ years he had difficulty breathing and moving, daily life became a tramatic experience for him. He had been a part of our family for about 17 years. Deciding that euthenazia was the most humane thing we could do for him was a long and hard decision. The staff were very understanding, they allowed me to hold my dog as they injected him, he slowly shut his eyes and then stopped breathing. The staff helped me place him in my car and I buried him at home.
My next dog came a few years later. Another rescue animal of unknown age, this time a chow. From our first vet visit to his 2nd to last he recieved all his care at SVC (over 10 yrs.) Even while on prevention he acquired heart worms . His breathing became more labored and he lost his strength. Because we aquired him in TN at the rescue center we toke him there for his final day (as per forms we signed when we got him.) It was difficult. While the rescue personel were very nice they were not as personal as SVC. They didn't see us on a regular basis and didn't know the bound we formed. I guess it was easier for them not to be emotionally involved for the few minutes they were with us.
Then a dog adopted us, he was a hound. A welcome addition to our family. I think he was dropped by the side of the road (no one claimed him, no collar, no one placed an ad, and no one answered ours ...you know how that goes.). We allowed him inside but he prefered outside at night. He wasn't loud, and our neighbors never complained about him bothering anything. Many neighbors said they never saw our animals outside our property. Once we taught them the boundry lines they were content to remain at home. We returned home one evening and the hound was acting strange. Took him to SVC, they couldn't find anything. They asked if we would like to do some tests to rule out poisoning (we did). No poisoning found, then we did an x-ray of his chest (maybe phnemonia?) NO, HE HAD BEEN SHOT!!! There was no blood on his body. The vet wondered if the hole sealed itself after the bullet entered his body. There was a internal damage to our friend. I was angry, scared, concerned, and horrified. Could he recover, what would be his quality of life? Who would do such a thing, and why?? The vet talked to us in length about our options, but she stressed that most likely he would not survive the reconstruction surgery, or if he did he probably wouldn't suvive the shock to his body. We asked what she would do if this were her dog. She was honest and said she would do everything to make him comfortable, say good-bye and allow him to pass. We all cried, I held him, pet him, and she administered the shot. His pain ended soon after. We lost a great friend, and part of our family that day. We were so upset, this was too muchfor us to conprehend. Everyone understood how this loss was so great, and their compassion and empathy was beyond belief. They understood we had lost a part of our family. Not "just a dog." They treated his injuries and pain as well as our feelings with great respect.
From the day we stepped into the SVC to the final call for our three furry family members we received the best of care, our questioins were always answered and our animals' welfare was always top prioity. Our collie, chow, and hound are sorely missed. We hsve lived in Seymour for about 20 years, and all our animals were well cared for by SVC personnel. I wouldn't have had it any other way.
