I have a 12 year old dog that has been falling over and becomes paralyzed for a couple of minutes the last few days. When this happens he also wets himself and just looks at you with fear in his eyes.
We have had this dog for 12 years and it is a very hard time for us. We've known for months that he is getting close to time to have to put him down. We do not want to end his life prematurely but the last thing we want to happen is to make this dog suffer more than necessary. With this happening we decided it was time so I called Kirk Veterinary last night and discussed what was happening and euthanasia.
They told me to bring him in in the morning but I would not be able to be with him because "this doctor is kind of shaky about doing this". I hesitantly agreed because there are not many choices in this community. When I did though I received a call 5 minutes after and told the doctor (Not Kirk, Another) thought he was healthy and wanted to observe him for 24 hours which I was okay with until I started thinking about what would happen at night.

So I called in the afternoon and asked if someone would be with him overnight and they said no. I was not comfortable with this and the assistant suggested I come in and speak with the doctor. When I came in the doctor never did come to speak with me. The assistant brought the dog back out and said they would not euthanize him.
I asked if they thought I was lying about what happened and she said no but people have done that before. I asked if they considered what we were going through as his family for 12 years. I explained how we had had to prepare my 13 year old daughter for this and now I was supposed to take him home and tell her they said they don't believe me and think nothing is wrong with him but don't get your hopes up because we still are going to have to put him down.
To this she responded that they had the dog all day and nothing happened. Unfortunately the dog laid in a cage all day. You have to stand to fall down.
I understand valuing the life of animals but we as their stewards are also responsible not to allow them to suffer. To do so is the ultimate cruelty. This clinic not only is causing my dog to suffer needlessly they have caused great emotional grief to my family at a time when we are already grieving and looking to a professional to help us through this time. If I am wrong then care enough to find out what is wrong with my dog. Don't just tell me to take him.
I don't understand with the amount of people who just drop dogs off on the side of the road when they don't want them (we have 3 rescue dogs including this one) that if they think I am so heartless to bring a dog in just because I want to kill it why wouldn't I do that instead and in God's name why would they send him back home with me? This doctor just did not want to do it and they said that from the start. Regardless of what pain it causes to my dog he just doesn't want to do it.
I cannot believe the callousness of this doctor or the cowardliness to not even speak with me and of his staff for their uncaring attitude to him, to me and to my family.
