What causes swelling during exercise?

When ever I exercise or it's really hot out my hands and feet swell up and it becomes pretty uncomfortable, does anyone know what causes this? Could it be the food I am eating? Are there any remedies that anyone knows of?

I have heard that this is normal to retain water when you are working out. I have always thought that it had to do with the heat. I have noticed that my wedding ring is harder to take off in the summer time, when I a more active. In the winter time, it is looser when I am less active even thought I am heavier.
