Are you eating a chemically balanced diet?

Today's blog topic is food fundamentals. In spite of the millions of published pages on the subject, it really does come down to Michael Pollan's brilliant summation in his NY Times Sunday Magazine article titled Unhappy Meals: "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

If your goal is to lose weight, increase your energy levels, think more clearly, improve your skin, alkalize your blood, detoxify, or heal from a disease the very first thing that you must focus on is a return to real food - and that's where it gets challenging because most of what carries a Nutrition Facts label is not food!

The United States puts more chemical non-food ingredients into the food supply than any other nation on earth. Many of these chemicals are illegal in other countries. The non-food chemical ingredients are classified as GRAS or "generally regarded as safe." Hmmm... to me that doesn't sound very reassuring and in fact it is virtually meaningless.

Here's why: the chemicals that are tested (and not all are!), are typically tested individually. However, this is not how we consume them. Colors, flavors, preservatives, texture enhancers, flavor boosters, fillers, etc, are all found in the same food so you consume chemicals in cocktail form not singularly. Anyone who has ever had a chemistry class or even a child's chemistry set knows that chemicals together are different than chemicals alone.

So regardless of your personal goal, the most important first step in achieving that goal and better overall physical, mental and emotional health through good nutrition is to get the non-food chemicals out of your diet. Foods marketed to dieters are particularly bad, so don't fall for it! Just about anything processed will be a problem, and even be aware of "enhanced". Foods that have been "enhanced" have been spiked with man-made chemical "nutrients" and many of these manufactured nutrients come from China. Food that has not been stripped of it's God-given nutrition, needs no enhancing.

To make this really easy, choose foods that your great, great grandmother would recognize, eat frequent small meals and include lots of color and you will discover amazing success.
