One of the most effective machines of a worksite health program that I both seen and had the privilege to work in was the Department of Occupational Health and Preventative Medicine at the US Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. Some of the offices that fell under this department were preventative medicine, industrial hygiene, safety, mental health, substance abuse and rehabilitation program, audiology, occupational health, population health and health promotions.

During that last two of a three year tour I had the great enjoyment of working in the health promotions office. Some of the programs that we had to offer were tobacco cessation, health and fitness assessments (HFA), individualized exercise and nutrition programs design based on the results of the HFA, clinical weight management program, remedial exercise assistance for sea command, parent hospital command and all other shore commands of the base, classes both local to the office and at onsite of both ship and shore commands. The staff of the office were also part of the hospital, so there was access to results of and [according guidelines set by the national institute of health (NIH)] an ability to order basic laboratory tests. We also worked as a team with the Moral, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Wellness Center to function as a prescreening for personal training and try to provide as many opportunities of health, wellness and fitness to civilians, dependents and Japanese nationals that worked on the base; as well as, supporting the needs of both sea and shore commands. The office also helped coordinate the annual Preventative Health Assessment (PHA) of shore based commands in preparation of active and reserve duty members for the personal fitness assessment (PFA).

Wow, if my old civilian supervisor ever leaves there and his position opens up; I will jump on in a heart beat.
