We live in a litigious society and the idea of touching another is often confused for something other than human connection. The corporate world is consumed with sexual misconduct complaints and the notion of one employee touching another employee send everyone to their legal counsels office.
The truth is that as humans we need touch. Think of the infants in orphanages who are failure to thrive babies. Don't you think adults can have failure to thrive? If you're facing a chronic or life-threatening illness isn't it possible to suffer from failure to wellness? Touch is an amazing treatment modality.
During times of illness whether out of ignorance or fear many facing a health challenge don't receive the physical nurturance they need or desire. It's easy to jump to the conclusion that we're talking about sex, but that's not the case. The truth is that when we touch another person we transfer energy. That transfer of energy can have positive outcomes for the recipient whether or not they are facing a health challenge. For those who are facing a health challenge, any form of healing touch can boost immune function and provide the individual with the feeling of inclusion.
Next time you meet a friend...hug them! Let them know you are concerned about their wellness by making physical contact. Be aware of how their touch impacts your physical being, I think you'll be surprised.
As a patient empowerment strategist I guide those facing a chronic or life-threatening illness through education, support and inspiration. The goal is for each person to become their own health advocate!
