Sensory-Processing Disorders improved with chiropractic treatment

According to natural news and Dr. David Jockers "In 2011, we have more children and young adults affected by neurodevelopmental disorders than ever before in history.(Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/035097_chiropractic_SPD_sensory_processing.html#ixzz20DrzyuI7)It also stated that 5% of elementary aged students met the criteria of SPD, which includes Autism and ADHD. These are often considered overlapping spectrum disorders and to confuse situation more there are different levels of autism of which aspergers is a more mild form of the condition.

These are difficult conditions to classify because they are many times associated with other conditions that are emotional like ODD (opposition defiance disorder). It appears that there may be a genetic predisposition since it often runs in families with other learning issues such as parents with dyslexia of ADD diagnosed in the past. It also seems apparent that there may be an environmental trigger that may lead to the expression of symptoms. Some of the suggested triggers include early childhood trauma, environmental toxins, food allergens, the avoidance of breast feeding and heavy vaccination. This lead too much confusion and argument. One of the things that seems to be common among people with SPD is ether an over activity or under activity of one of the sensory systems. This is the brain is receiving to much or to little sensory input from one of the senses.

People who have these symptoms have been through many different types of treatments from traditional medication to alternative treatments to treat everything from food allergies to metal toxicity. The most important treatments for the symptoms of these conditions may be treatments that quiet or stimulate the over active parts of the nervous system. From Natural News "Two recent studies published in the 2011 edition of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health showed the benefits of chiropractic on SPD and Autism. In both cases the children were diagnosed with upper cervical subluxation patterns that were thought to have occurred from early childhood traumas." A subluxation as defined by the chiropractic profession is a misalignment of the spinal vertebra that results in both tissue changes and neurological dysfunction of the nerves involved.

There are two ways in which chiropractic can help the first is by adjusting the spine and resolving any interference and dysfunction in the nervous system. The second way in which some chiropractors approach these conditions is by I identifying the sensory system involved and helping to re train the patient to deal with and in some case activate or deactivate the sensory system that is causing the conditions as well as addressing any nutrition deficiencies such as hypo glycimia which can cause over or under activity of the nervous system. For more detail of this you can find it on my post on SPD found at this web address (http://mahler-chiropractic.com/2011/04/27/children-and-sensory-processing-disorders/).

Chiropractic can be a very useful tool in helping children and adults with SPD to reach their maximum potential in life. Is that not what all parents ultimately want? Children who can be the best they can be. Even though many people with SPD often have areas of difficulty they often have areas of tremendous gifts which must be tapped.
