Telephone and Online Support for Weight Loss Works

According to an article published on The Wall Street Journal on November 15, 2011, support and encouragement can just as well come via the telephone, internet and email. In a 415-person study published online in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association, researchers reported similar weight loss in people getting support remotely and those getting remote support plus in-person group and individual sessions.

Participants - most of whom were female - started out at an average weight of 228 pounds, with a body mass index of 36.6, or obese. Their average age was 54.

The remote group lost about 10 pounds after 24 months of the program, which included more intensive support for the first six months and then lighter support for the remaining 18. The group getting in-person help along with online and phone support lost about 11 pounds, and a control group receiving only brief advice lost about two pounds.

About 38% of the remote group lost 5% or more of their initial body weight, vs. 41% of the in-person group and 19% of the control group.
