Look. 12 years ago I had to see Dr. Safman for a work related injury. I worked in a hospital and am particularly picky about doctors. I was very pleased with the thorough, patient and effective care he gave me...and I had a nurse case manager with me at every appointment; she too was happy with him. I had resolution of my problem at that time. Fast forward ten years. Now I have a problem that could be appropriately treated by a PM&R doctor. I remembered Dr. Safman fondly and I booked an appointment. This was not the same man. First, I heard a pharmaceutical rep outside the door...and again...I work in the health care industry so I listened closely. They were billing their med as the only thing that could effectively treat fibromyalgia. What struck me is that when this rep came in, they got priority over patients. I know the function of reps, but usually they have to wait to get face time with the doctors AFTER or BETWEEN patient appointments. This rep was also very generous to Dr. Safman and his staff. I heard talk of trips and of catered lunches, etc. for staff. NOW, Dr. Safman walks in and has information about fibromyalgia in his hands. Seriously? He doesn't know why I'm there. He found a number of symptoms and pressure points that were 'proof' that I had fibromyalgia. I believe that fibromyalgia is a legitimate diagnosis and even believe (these days) I may have a mild case...however...I was not convinced Dr. Safman was practicing his medicine in the spirit of his oath. He was a walking, talking fibromyalgia convert. This was not the man who had treated me several years earlier and to me EVEN if I DID have fibromyalgia, I did not feel as though I would get fair and equitable treatment for that condition from this physician. I left and would not return. NOW, fast forward a couple more years. My sister in law. She is a very sweet lady but she is mentally ill. She is diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder. She is not her own guardian, her daughter is her guardian. She takes medications that help her quell the voices in her head so she can function in society. These meds keep her stable and free from the multiple psychotic episodes like she has been hospitalized for in the past. Unfortunately, a side effect of these medications is that not only do they quiet the voices...they make her more impressionable. She got in to see Dr. Safman. He was given her history and her med list. He proceeded to prescribe her strong narcotics and Lyrica. She took them for about a month before anyone found out. Finally, my niece got a call from the pharmacist. My sister in law got her first prescription filled at a nearby pharmacy. Once she got her refill a month later at her regular pharmacy, the pharmacist freaked out and called my niece. There were significant interactions with what Dr. Safman prescribed and what she was already on. Not only that, she had been on the narcotics long enough she would need to taper down her dose so she wouldn't go through withdrawals. We are in the process of cleaning up this mess now. If you want a Dr. Feelgood, this is your man. He'll tell you what you want to hear...but this man, in no way, practices good or safe medicine and it is only a matter of time before he kills someone. This is not the medicine you want for you or your family member. It will only lead to more harm.
