Dr. Richards was very polite and listened to my problem that I was having and told me that I that I did not have to have surgery the night that I went in, but that I do have a " jacked up back" (his words) and that I would eventually need surgery and it will be because of my L5 disc.I wish I had gotten a referral dr's down at UCD because when I told my PCP what I was told, he just down played it and said that whatever intern or who ever treated me was incorrect and told me that I was going have to accept my life for what it is, and thinks that it is acceptable that a 40 year old woman that has bulging discs from L3-5 and S1 and recently became incontinent not only in my sleep, but also while I am awake, to have to possibly wear depends. I was told this when I woke up in the morning and was incontinent for the 4th time. instead of sending me somewhere, he told me that most back problems are from the neck up and that I should see a psychiatrist or a therapist and maybe back off on my meds. not only does he test me and knows that I do not over medicate myself, not to mention the fact that I was awake, 2 out of the 4 times so far that the incontinence happened, but a therapist or a psychiatrist isn't going to fix being incontinent. I was floored that my dr that I have had since before I got injured and hurt myself 13 years ago would say such a thing.
I appreciated Dr Richards honesty, and wish that I was able to get in contact with him, (I tried and had no luck) because I have an SSI hearing coming up on July 28th (next week) and I need someone who can tell the judge that I have major problems. My PCP who just told me to learn to live with my life, which I already have, its been 13 years, and accept that nothing is going to change and it is going to be the same for the rest of my life. I asked him to write down what he just told me and so I could give it to the SSI judge on July 28th because I am applying for Disability. He flat out told me no and that the judge can request his notes. I have no words! I used to be very active and I have modified my life to almost nothing in order to live at a pain level of 8. when I am at a 10, I go to the ER. I can't stand, or sit for more than 30 minutes, I can't bend, lift, jump, run, much less do most of my chores around my home. I met Dr Richards 1 time and he is very sympathetic and gets right to the point. Again, If there is a way I could get a hold of him, please email me and let me know.
