We were unfortunate enough to have Dr. Laput assigned to us and our newborn son at St. Francis Medical Center, after he was born. After seeing our son several different times following his birth, she chose the moments right before we were being discharged to come into our room and very coldly tell us, with literally no warning and no kind lead in, that our son had Down syndrome and she knew this because of his eyelids. Every nurse that came in following said they didn't see it, but this doctor insisted. We would have accepted this and loved our sweet boy just the same, but it was the very uncaring and unprofessional way she presented this. We had to wait two days to see out pediatrician because it was Labor Day weekend and when we did see him, he told us it was ludicrous and that he saw no grounds on which she should have diagnosed DS. He said there are 13 indicators and the eyelids are one of the least conclusive. Four years later, our little boy is healthy and happy and I'm getting ready to have baby #2. We know DS is always a possibility and we know it is a life changing reality for so many parents. And so, we want to warn other parents about health care providers that would treat something so serious with such little feeling and diagnose with so little evidence. Avoid this pediatrician!
