Just a warning: if you go to any orthopedic surgeon in Key West, NO OTHER orthopod in Key West will see you after that. Literally; they ask, and they run an exclusive non-compete system on the island. I broke my wrist; no one had any openings to see me except Dr. Lockwood. Once I'd seen him, there was NO WAY to get a second opinion on the island. Dr. Lockwood has a cheerful, experienced bedside manner, but he can be very cavalier in treating you. I had a broken wrist; he took a couple of X-rays and put it into a cast for weeks. When the cast came off (awfully smelly; there was no preliminary swab down with povidone before the cast went on) there was clearly something wrong. When I moved my forearm there was a "clunking" sensation, I had no strength in the joint, and the wrist seemed misshapen. Dr. Lockwood said that all I needed was some physical therapy and everything would be better, but I shouldn't expect it to be perfect because it had been broken. In other words, he does not listen to his patients, but argues with them. Every time I'd ask a question, it seemed like he was annoyed. I understand that doctors are busy, but this is the use of my hand and arm for the next twenty years or more! So I went up to Miami. The orthopedic hand and wrist doctor there had a real-time imaging system, and as he rotated my weeks-old fracture, it became obvious that the bone had shattered and been bent upwards at an angle, which is why it didn't show up easily on the straight-on X-ray (I don't know why Dr. Lockwood didn't pick it up on the dorsal view). The first thing they asked us was whether we wanted copies of these images "for the lawsuit." Nice thought, but no, I just want to make sure no one with a serious injury to anything complicated does not fall into the same trap I did. The surgeons in Miami fixed my wrist (includes screws now), and this time when the cast came off it smelled faintly of iodine, and I have back full mobility and probably 90% of the original wrist strength. DO NOT be bullied by the positively Medieval "specialists' non-compete" system in Key West -- get the best right at the start, or get in that car and drive north to civilization, or risk being crippled the rest of your life by their collective sublime indifference to patients' needs.
