While he can come across as rather cold or stern (as one particular commentator with a lot of negative feedback stated on several websites), it should be mentioned that Dr. Stagner is not just a typical psychiatrist with a M.D. and residency in psychiatry - he is also a full-fledged classical Freudian psychoanalyst. As someone who shall eventually be a licensed Clinical Psychologist and long-time former patient, I feel that people should know that traditional psychoanalysts like Dr. Stagner tend to be rather cold in their interactions with patients to some degree because they function as a sort of interpreter (analyst) of one's feelings, life choices and events, dreams, and fantasies - and therapists with his particular training likely have not been influenced by the focus on warmth in interactions that humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers introduced to various psychotherapy modalities via his creation of Client-centered Therapy in the 1950s. While I didn't realize that until late in my time as a patient of his, as I had not yet learned about the different ways that forms of psychotherapy viewed the doctor-patient relationship, he always seemed like a traditionalist in some regards and he asked some questions that seemed strange or irrelevant at the time (like his interest in my sex life and my sexual fantasies relating to BDSM), but now that I have at least some understanding of psychoanalysis, his questions make far more sense than at the time. Even though I was a bit confused with his particular interests in specific parts of my life that other therapists did not ask or care about, his treatment and diagnosis of my ADHD and Major Depressive Disorder were extremely helpful in the long-term. In particular, I don't need to take as much Adderall as I did when he was my doctor because under his care, I learned different things about myself that were inevitably very important to helping myself. Unlike many psychiatrists, he did not go overboard with prescribing a million medications, and he listened to my concerns and answered my questions (including those about what the psychoanalytic perspective would say about my problems, weird dreams, relationships, and interests). Overall, Dr. David L. Stagner was a very good doctor for me, especially in hindsight after learning in my psychology classes as a student at Macalester College, how his psychoanalytic training explained some aspects about his medical practice and his demeanor. If not for him, I don't know whether I could have even completed my degree from Macalester, because I would likely still be suffering from some problems he helped to cure. If you need immediate treatment for something like extreme depression that will likely cause you to attempt suicide in the near-future, his psychiatric and psychoanalytic practice would probably not be your best choice. However, if you are in the stages of healing after psychiatric hospitalization, he could facilitate long-term growth that may change your life and help you to learn about and change yourself.

I was particularly dissatisfied with the behavior of Mr. Stagner as well as the questionable quality of care that I received.

He does not project typical human qualities like empathy or humor. He’s stern. He used foul language. I was very uncomfortable in his space.

His office was unkempt to the point of being flat out dirty. Dead leaves from dying plants litter the ground. The artificial tree in the corner provided an ample dusting of potting soil in the corner of the office clear of typical pedestrian traffic. Swag from pharmaceutical companies adorns shelves proudly.

Mr. Stagner’s sessions were minimalistic at best, he interacted very little. He ultimately refused to answer my questions about the side-effects of the medications he could prescribe, telling me that the information is ‘out there.’ He offered me nothing other than medication, stating flatly that he felt drugs were his best way of helping me. Not a ringing endorsement for his profession.
Given his lack of explanation, his aggressive and arrogant mannerisms, and an apparently indifference to rapport and trust; it’s impossible for me to begin down a very expensive path potentially wrought with pitfalls, with a doctor that I cannot trust (or even tolerate).

I think this guy is an artifact of the previous generation. Its time he go out to pasture.

After this very expensive mistake, I’ve moved on to another doctor. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
