Minimally invasive percutaneous lumbar fusion

George Rappard, MD

In traditional fusion surgery, the surgeon enters the operative site by stripping important stabilizing muscles from the spine, removing bone and cutting through stabilizing ligaments. Inminimally invasive percutaneous spine surgeon, the physician is able to access the diseased disc without dysrupting important structures. A discectomy is carried out and bone graft is placed at the discectomy space to facilitate fusion, or the bony joing of th evertebral bodies. Through tiny skin incisions screws are placed in order to stabilize the operative segment long enough for fusion and healing to take place. Becouse muscles and ligaments are not dysrupted, recovery is quicker and easier than traditional fusion procedures.
