Sacral illiac joint fusion

George Rappard, MD

The sacral illiac joint (SIJ) can be the cause of back pain in a significant number of aging individuals. Injections provide transient relief. Burning of the nerve, or rhizotomy, can bring three to six months of relief. In minimally invasive fusion, small rods are placed through a tiny incisionin the skin. The rods pass through the joint, causing it to join together and stabilizing it. Patients go home the same day with band aids over their incisions. the stabilizing effect is a long term cure for back pain form SIJ pain.
