After two years of symptoms, which kept worsening, and being told by my internist that I was worried about 'nothing', Dr. Soelling saved my life. I had never seen him before, but after my regular doctor laughingly said, "How many second opinions do you need for a hemorrhoid?", I decided I needed one more. Dr. Soelling had scoped my husband, six years my senior, and he was the only gastroenterologist I knew in our area.

I called up one afternoon at 1:00 o'clock and described my symptoms to his nurse. She told me that Dr. Soelling would call me back personally, and two hours later he did. I remember it was snowing (a scary thing in the northwest where entire counties only have a few snowplows), and I had left work early as a precaution. As my cell phone rang, I was five minutes from my house. He asked me to repeat my symptoms, and then told me I was lucky. He'd had a 4:00 o'clock cancellation and he could see me right away.

Although I was a complete stranger and new patient, he immediately took me seriously. After he examined me he said, "We are going to find out where all this blood is coming from. You are a lucky girl as I have an opening Friday morning. Take this purgative and follow these directions and we'll take care of this right away."

I found out that Friday morning, which was coincidentally my 24th wedding anniversary, that I had a stage three tumor. My treatment consisted of chemo and radiation and then surgery to remove the tumor. It was intense, long and successful. Dr. Soelling not only listened to me, but he took care of me and now I have a lot to celebrate.

Monday will be my 32nd wedding anniversary and complete my 8th year of survival after cancer diagnosis. How has my life been? My little granddaughter was born in 2003. My youngest child graduated from Harvard in 2004. I was the 'chef' for 75 people when my daughter got married. I have learned to sculpt in porcelain and clay and paint in watercolor. I’m working on a book and still working professionally. My oldest granddaughter just got accepted at Columbia. Not only did my husband not leave me during my serious and prolonged treatment and recovery, but I learned how much he really loved me and how much other people did too. Now there is another grandchild due in July of 2009. I intend to be there too.

Yes, Dr. Soelling saved my life. There is no way I can ever repay him and knowing that he believed me and did not minimize my concerns was also a great gift. We know our own bodies and when something is wrong. The validation of a physician who listens is the beginning of a cure. Now, here’s my advice. Before you have any symptoms, get a screening scope. Your loved ones will be glad you did.
