If the information below does not answer your questions, then please call me at the number listed. I return all phone calls within 24 hours and most the same day. Patients often see me for some combination of anger, depression or anxiety; several have complex medical conditions such as chronic pain or sleep disorders. I treat patients participating in 12-step recovery. I have experience helping clients resolve family, relationship and work problems, and helping people live successfully with chronic illness, whether theirs or that of someone else. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in two states (Georgia and Alabama), and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Illinois. I am nationally board-certified in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, pain management, and hypnotherapy. My professional training is rehabilitation counseling, a branch of counseling specializing in medically-complex patients, which I have done since 1979. I do pre-surgical consultations and evaluations for chronic opioid therapy, medication management counseling (chronic opioid, therapy, pain, antidepressant, and/or antianxiety medications), and substance abuse assessments for adolescents and adults. I see clients for employee assistance programs. I teach behavioral parenting classes. My orientation is behavioral and cognitive-behavioral. (Famous examples of cognitive-behavioral therapists in the media are Dr. Laura and Dr. Phil.) These approaches teach problem-solving in the here-and-now. I believe that as people focus on what they can fix now, they become more capable of finding a sense of peace and contentment in their lives. Sometimes it happens fast, sometimes it takes a bit more time. I practice evidence-based methods, which means there is at least one research study backing any technique I use, and most have many studies. I focus on brief therapies, including hypnotherapy, and common-sense solutions to give relief as quickly as possible. My spiritual philosophies are mainstream Judaeo-Christian. While it is true that personal growth itself can be uncomfortable, and sometimes things feel worse before they feel better, I work with each person to reduce unnecessary pain. To reach peak life satisfaction may require time and effort, but the rewards for doing so are tremendous. And the bottom line - one has the pain of staying stuck or the discomfort of personal growth. Personal growth is better. Some clients need only a few sessions to achieve their goals, while others may require months or even years of therapy. As a client, you are in complete control, and you may end your relationship at any point. My office environment is warm, cozy and comfortable. Sometimes personal growth is uncomfortable, so I want the physical surroundings as pleasant as possible. Personally, I am happily married to my original husband, since March 25, 1989. I was a music major in undergraduate school and am a sports junkie. I bleed Kentucky blue and am happy to have married into the Auburn family.
