I am finding Babcock a troubling place to live. The manager was cheerful when I was signing my lease and said other than regular worker entrance for typical maintenance like changing CA filters & smoke alarm batteries, & pest control, "Babcock apartments are just like any other apartments."

What wasn't mentioned is how often and how many hours residents are without water for different reasons. Or that the residents' storage area has water leaks that leak on the residents' stored items & that residents would not be told when this happens. They didn't mention there are rodents in the storage area that nest and leave droppings in residents' stored items. And they didn't mention that some of the apartments have AC units that drip and overflow heavily into the apartments in the summer which damages or causes loss of residents' items in their apartments which causes stress.

Babcock is marketed as a nonsmoking apartment building but residents can smoke on their balconies and the smoke then enters the apartments of nonsmokers who have their balcony doors or windows open and management says they can do nothing about this.

They didn't mention the hours of hammering that can't be drowned out while workers get an apartment ready for a new resident. Or how many times this would happen because of the amount of turnover here.

They did not mention the lawn spraying of pesticides and other chemicals happening three or four times a year which drifts into the apartments. They did not mention that the provided laundry area has 12 washers, and only two of them wash and rinse with clean water. The other 10 use less than half the amount of water to wash with, which does not completely empty for the cycle which is called the rinse. This is to conserve water but the washers doing this are not 'green' built washers. Only washers that they have a flip switched to use less water.

They didn't mention that maintenance work is often done poorly and can take weeks before being addressed. Or the resident is told it can't be fixed. Or that many residents are unable to sleep because of the loudness of the machines on the roof over the top floor.

And since living here I have met many residents who are afraid to complain because of examples of punitive action by management. Residents who are mostly poor and have no where else to go, or are bed ridden and are afraid of making management angry and being told to live elsewhere, or are old and frail and have no other options. And residents who are simply afraid to speak up because of the examples of what has happened to other residents who do speak up here.

I have found management to be forgetful of what they agreed to do. Or it is only partially done. And on more than a couple of times they have changed what they say they said.

They did not give me and are still not giving prospective residents full disclosure on the darker side of living in Babcock. The management here seems to be a combination of mollification with smiles, saying one thing and denying this later, and threats.

If I knew then what I know now I would not have moved to Babcock. I would not recommend Babcock to anyone or to anyone moving a loved one here. I know many residents who would leave if they financially were able to.

On the other hand there are residents who have lived here pleasantly for years. But I meet more unhappy residents than I do these residents.

Did this provider ever take personal phone calls while in the appointment room with you?
He/she would never do that! Their full attention is always on me.
