I wished I had read reviews first (see Yelp). My wife and I were looking for counseling for our son and daughter immediately following a tragic death in the family. Like two other reviewers on Yelp, we found Stephen through our EAP, he was immediately available, and that should have been our first clue that this was a bad move.
My wife attended the first meeting with our children and had a bad vibe from the start. She scheduled a second meeting and all four of us attended. That meeting was mediocre but the EAP covers the cost of the first three visits, so we continued as if there was nothing to lose.
Similar to another reviewer, I was quite offended in our third meeting when he questioned our insurance and copay. He's rather brash and insulting. So the fourth meeting began with Stephen extending his hand requesting copay. I handed him the check, it was pre-written, I was prepared recalling the way he was crystal clear about payment upfront. He requested a meeting with me alone, I am so happy we met alone prior to allowing him alone in a room with our children. The judgmental Stephen described in other reviews ferociously attacked me. I showed him my watch, my heart rate was 120 just sitting there. I told him my heart was racing as he made me feel so uncomfortable. I was seeking a kind supporting counselor for our children and what I got was the opposite. Five minutes in, I asked for my check back and told him we would not be needing his awful services. He stared at me with anger and contempt (no way he was giving the check back) while I expediently gathered my belongings, exited his trashy office, and gathered my family on the way out the door. I would strongly discourage anyone from working with Stephen. Don't let the convenience of his empty schedule lure you in. I can see why he is using the EAP programs as referrals, it's his only way to attract new victims.
I'm not sure what type of counseling Stephen is good at, perhaps browbeating people who aren't honest with themselves? He isn't good with children and doesn't have a kind heart or soul. Stephen only served as an angry, selfish, agitated, self-righteous, judgmental counselor who doesn't seem to have a kind, courteous, caring, supportive, bone in his body.
I hope someone can save this poor soul, he really could use some love, compassion, and serious counseling.
