If I could give a lower rating I would. The MICU unit nurses are generally very good but some do have attitude problems. In particular, one nurse named Dawn is very confrontational, belligerent, rude and simply does not care about her patients or their families. She yells at both the patients and their families and does not care what they are going through. She even said she does not care. I distinctly remember when she found out that she was going to get written up for her behavior she threw a heating pad on my mother's legs and my mother had just had two heart Cath stent operations. She grabs the family's belongings without permission and moves them around as if those items are trash. I believe the MICU unit nurse Dawn should not only be reprimanded for actions (which the administrators told me is not the first time that she is been called out on her behavior) but that she should be fired so that she will learn a lesson which she obviously did not learn in nursing school. That lesson is compassion. Perhaps all she did was choose nursing for money or perhaps she chose it and then lost all sense of compassion and civility. It is my hope with this post that families will learn what I did not know and I wish I would have known. When a nurse is being belligerent, rude, confrontational, and/or emotionally distressing to the patient and/or their family, one can immediately request that the nurse be changed. The nurse can be reported for their actions, be put on probation and possibly fired. I do not know what the administration or the administrator I talked with to report her at Hamilton Medical Center is going to do to but it is my hope she will learn a hard lesson. Just because the family is trapped within the MICU unit that does not mean that you can do whatever you want to them and to their loved one in the hospital bed. Even though they may not be able to do anything at that moment, in time, there will always be retribution. In this case, that retribution comes with an official complaint, an administrative report, further review, possible probation and hopefully a pink slip. Though Dawn is a horrendous nurse, there are wonderful nurses like Melody, Lyto, Kim, and Olivia. These were the only shining lights within the MICU. Dawn is a dark cloud of a frustrated angry menopausal woman who needs to re-learn how to be a nurse, take some anger manageme=nt classes or get out of a profession she obviously does not love. For those going to have family members, beware of this individual. She simply does not care about her patients, their families, or even her job. If she cared about even one of these she would give herself the attitude check she so obviously needs.
