About
Beverly Munsing, LCSW
I specialize in ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, PTSD, SELF ESTEEM ISSUES, I help people as they are coming out of bad RELATIONSHIPS, and help people look at relationship patterns. I am often told that I am a good listener, and people know that they have my total attention during the entire session. I give lots of feedback, make many suggestions, point people toward resources that they can use on-line, give out handouts, and give tools help you help yourself to speed up your recovery.
ANXIETY, if it is mild or moderate, can be helped with various types therapies besides traditional counseling. I like to empower my clients by teaching them forms of of relaxation exercises and techniques that they can then apply as they face life’s stress points now and in the future. There are a variety of skills you can learn to calm yourself down, without the necessity for medication. Depending on your individual situation, I may teach you Tapping, breathing exercises, mindfulness, Energy Psychology techniques, and others. I will also help you figure out where your anxiety comes from, and ways to reframe or balance the negatives those sources may load you with.
Sometimes, people with SEVERE ANXIETY or panic go to the hospital because they feel that maybe they have a life threatening illness - maybe heart is racing, your stomach is really sore, your chest is tight and it's difficult to breathe, you can't concentrate, or you are always exhausted. I can help you determine when you need to go to the hospital, and when it is just severe anxiety that you can handle yourself.
DEPRESSION like anxiety, can come from chemical changes in the brain but often can be a recently developed condition, or you may have had it all of your life. Depression generally comes with lots of negative thoughts, like, “I am not good enough, no one will like me if they know who I really am.” “I am a failure, and always will be.” “No will ever love me.” I will help you look at each of your thoughts and challenge the truth in them. I will teach you new ways of thinking, and help you catch yourself when you mind goes in those directions.
If TRAUMA happens to be the root of your anxiety, or a significant cause, I do EMDR which really gets to the heart of the trauma, and is able to decrease your every day anxiety level, and help your body relax. Maybe your experienced threats as a child, maybe you were in a bad accident, maybe you were in an abusive relationship, faced life threatening situations or saw others get beat up. Maybe you were sexually assaulted, or saw someone die. EMDR is an excellent technique to get rid of the fallout from trauma that has kept you from enjoying life. You will be able to acknowledge it as history, without the physical feelings of threat, fear, or guilt.
People rarely realize it, but many of us have trauma from bullying, and abusive relationships, childhood issues, or work. I do EMDR for trauma, which really gets to the heart of the trauma, It is able to decrease your every day anxiety level, and help your body relax.
I view counseling as listening, and as teaching new skills that will help you understand yourself and grow as a person. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Energy Psychology, EMDR, and many techniques to help you relax and change your negative thinking. I am an avid learner myself, and have learned many skills and techniques in my 20 years as a therapist. I have an eclectic approach.
If you often find yourself in the same type of negative romantic relationships, we can figure out what is at the root of that problem, and the way you think that gets you into those relationships.
