I expected a caring professional who was concerned for my well-being & that's what I got. I saw her in a group therapy setting: all of us suffering from the same disorder, OCD. I was used to one-on-one therapy so this was new to me. It was very affirming to hear both men and women express the myriad ways this disorder manifests itself. Her educating us about this very under-diagnosed disorder was truly a freeing experience for me. Her approach was affirmation that we weren't "weird", this was a biochemical brain disorder. She was completely unbiased. She is very skilled at being kind and attentive to all members of the group (6 total). Her approach was new for me: behavior modification rather than what causes this (our individual histories showed what she had taught about it: it tends to be present with various mood disorders, which we all had). She challenged each member in ways very attuned to how the OCD manifested itself in them: there is no one set way, but there are broad-brushed categories: contamination, unwanted or intrusive thoughts, putting objects in specific order and more. She combined this knowledge with exposure and her trusting presence and supportive actions. At the same time, she presented each of us with challenges that helped me see it was not the checking & re-checking, intrusive thoughts or washing, it was a brain disorder! Her office was easy to locate. She was always present before any of the group members arrived.. She used the time skillfully, no pushing, emphasizing we were undergoing a process of change in our brains by facing our OCD. It was one of the most important events of my life as now I have OCD, rather than OCD having me! She is one of the few people that changes your life by freeing you from OCD. But you have to be willing to challenge your OCD, Barbara can only lead one so far: then you must be willing to face the fear. She is an enthusiastic support person but not like a cheerleader: she knows how tormenting OCD can be. For me, she was and always will be a gift who changed my life for the better.

When comparing her to others in her field, I would say she is by far the worst I have ever seen. Saw her during her MSW days at Butler for family therapy. Arrogant, consecending, self-righteous. My family is troubled, long preceeding me. Yet, she was sure to scapegoat it all unto me, as I was the presumed troublemaker adolescent brat. Even though I emerged from HS with the least disciplinary record, the most community service (she called me 'narcissistic' and 'unempathetic' by the way) and have no trouble record to this day, she was sure to define me as defiant. What a moron, hope she learned something becoming a PhD.
