During childhood there are many places where difficulties my emerge, such as within the family, finding and keeping friends, and mastering academics and athletics.
Therapy with children and their families can help find new ways to cope.
Helping children learn how to express their feelings appropriately is often a goal of therapy. in addition, therapy can help parents to learn to manage their children’s behavior.
Adolescence is often a conflictual time. The adolescent is attempting to establish his/her independence and going through body changes on a daily basis.
Helping teens through all of these adjustments is a great challenge and a trained and experienced therapist can help.
Psychological Evaluations
A psychological evaluations can answer many questions for children and adults.
Often children present for treatment with behavior problems, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, and/or school refusal. A thorough evaluation, including intelligence testing, achievement testing, and checklists for the child, parent, and teacher to complete, can uncover an underlying issue. Many times the child may be suffering from ADD/ADHD, a Learning Disability, or possibly Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In adults, psychological evaluations can help determine a proper diagnosis and assist providers with proper medication management and treatment.
How do I know if it is ADHD?
Not everyone who has problems paying attention has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial, because treatment for other difficulties are different from treatments for ADHD. The evaluation for ADHD should involve many sources, including: a clinical interview, behavior checklists, as well as the IVACPT, which is a computerized performance test. This test allows for a direct assessment of the person’s attention span.
