Rick's direction changed after I visited him several times. He initially made my ex the scapegoat. Eventually he addressed my situation as if I was the problem (and maybe I am) but, doesn't his job involve addressing those problems head-on? In my opinion he ducked out when he should have been focused on working with me. I left his care, feeling disrespected and disappointed.

My experience with Richard Blackford, Ph.D. was less than stellar. I was a client at Affiliated Counseling for a year and a half. My first session with Dr. B was entirely dominated by him. He proceeded to be aggressive. From the start, he did not care to get to know me and the details of my life. He wanted to cure my eating disorder and disregarded my feelings. While I was there for my eating disorder, I regularly stated that I needed him to be more empathic. My belief is that he believed he was helping me by trying to cure me before my graduation. His response was that I needed to offer him empathy as well.
Now a therapist myself, I believe it is not my job to offer my therapist empathy if I am paying him to help me through my issues. That is not my role in session. I will admit and will admit that I was a difficult and stubborn client. I felt judged by Dr. B and seen as a sick patient and graduate student, rather than a human. He was harsh with me and my struggle to adhere to treatment, despite my stating what I needed from him. My treatment plan was not altered to meet where I was at. I was told I needed to be compliant He regularly quizzed me on my knowledge of psychology during sessions. He made smart remarks about my knowledge and my personality.
In one session, he did an exposure exercise with me that I was struggling to complete. He had taken my car keys so I was physically unable to leave until the exercise was complete. I did not complete the exercise (I was left alone to complete the exercise after my hour was up). He began locking up the offices for the night and stated that he would see "me in the morning."I at the last second finished it and was given my car keys. I followed up with him angrily in an email and he stated he would discuss the events. He never apologized for his behavior. I left services and was never followed up with by him.
Since then, I have found help elsewhere and done well in treatment. In my personal and professional opinion, he is unethical and egotistical. I caution anyone from seeking services from Dr. Richard Blackford. Anyone can hold an impressive degree but it's how they make you feel that matters.
