I take a supportive, yet practical problem solving approach to counseling, with a special emphasis on adolescent issues. I see counseling as a process of a person defining issues, clarifying values and implementing solutions with the help of a counselor. Counseling has often been used to help people when they have had problems, but I firmly believe it can also be used for maintaining wellness and goal setting. Although counselors may give advice at times, it is the clients responsibility to ultimately determine and implement solutions -after all, it is your life to live. My goal is to support you in figuring out ways to live your life in ways that work for you and do not harm others. I have over 14 years of local experience working in the mental health field.
I have a track record of helping and working well with people experiencing stress, depression, anger, anxiety, and/ or social skills issues. If some behaviors or attitudes are getting in your way, but you're not quite sure what to do about them, or you are not quite convinced someone else will be able to help you, it's a good chance that we might work well together. I am very experienced in working with survivors of trauma, I am supportive and very aware of issues around minority identity formation, especially around GLBT issues, and have lots of tools to help with anger management issues. I tend to focus on behaviors, and problem solving, but if it appears necessary to dig deeper in certain situations, am trained in ways to do that as well. That's another way of saying my approach is to use methods of counseling that seem to fit the circumstances rather than make people's issues fit into a "favorite" theoretical framework.
Mostly I believe that people just need some help clarifying their priorities and finding ways to make their actions fit their priorities. For more information, visit my website or give me a call.
