About

Mike Winberry, D.C.

My practice is limited to diagnostic digital motion x-ray, primarily of the neck (cervical spine). When people get whiplashed, they tear ligaments. Torn ligaments are permanent injuries which are also painful and progressive, and are recognized and quantified by the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Injury, 6th Ed., for the purpose of establishing an impairment rating. It is now known that damage to ligaments ends up manifesting as arthritis years after an injury. It is wrong to believe that MRI can identify all of the injuries caused by auto collisions. For decades now, one of the basic tenets of radiology has been that soft tissue injury can be inferred from bony malalignment. A digital motion x-ray study of the cervical spine consists of nine separate views, 15-20 seconds each, with motion, and the film is read for unusual gapping observed between bones which indicates that the ligaments have been compromised. All 22 major ligaments of the neck can be visualized (albeit indirectly) this way so that a proper diagnosis, which reflects the severity of the injury, can be rendered. Not knowing what's wrong with you while you go through seemingly endless treatment can be headed off by just doing the correct diagnostic tests. Remember, if your doctor didn't do the necessary diagnostic tests on you after your injury, he/she is guessing, and you don't want your doctor guessing about your health- and, particularly, the health of your neck. It takes about a half hour to perform a motion study- a small amount of time to get the information you need.

Services A specific referral for a digital motion x-ray study is not necessary. If you have not been in a motor vehicle collision, and if you are self-referred, Dr. Winberry will perform a short connective tissue examination in order to establish the medical necessity for the procedure.
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle collision, you will need a doctor's referral for the study. If you need Dr. Winberry to speak with your doctor, he will be glad to do so.

Unfortunately, your health insurance will not help you. Chiropractors are under the constraints of managed health care, and as such are bound by a very narrow range of procedure and diagnosis codes by the insurance industry. In other words, in most cases, all your insurance company will reimburse you for at the chiropractor's office is a spinal adjustment, and maybe a limited physical examination. They definitely will not reimburse you for code 76496, an unlisted diagnostic fluoroscopic procedure.

Call Dr. Winberry directly at 520-241-1995 if you have questions about your situation, and/or the procedure and pricing.
