About
Debbie Goodwin, Owner
Debbie Goodwin, Licensed Acupuncturist and Chinese Herbalist, earned her Masters Level Degree in Oriental Medicine from the Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, NC. She completed her undergraduate work at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. She is nationally licensed as a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture, and Chinese Herbology through NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.) Additionally, she is licensed as an acupuncturist by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board.
The practice of Classical Chinese Medicine was emphasized at Daoist Traditions but her training also included Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Five Element Acupuncture. The foundation of Chinese Medicine includes acupuncture, herbology, nutrition, tui na (massage) and energetics (qi gong). Each patient receives a complete diagnosis and treatment plan addressing most health conditions whether they manifest physically, emotionally or spiritually. Treatment may include acupuncture, herbal remedies, tui na, nutritional suggestions and lifestyle counseling.
Western medicine was taught throughout the four year program in preparation for the role of Chinese Medicine in today’s health care environment, as it intrinsically complements Western medicine. The integration of Eastern and Western medicines is the leading approach to health care today. Debbie works with several Western medical doctors, referring patients as appropriate to achieve their optimal health.
After completing her education Mrs. Goodwin started her private practice in Cary, North Carolina. She is the founder of Cary Acupuncture Clinic, Inc. Mrs. Goodwin had the opportunity to utilize the ancient art of Feng Shui, or the study of movement and space, in designing the clinic. It was her intention to create a healing space in which her patients feel ultimately comfortable and supported. Each treatment room including the ‘quiet’ (community) room are banked with large, sweeping windows allowing the outside environment to be a part of the healing process.
Debbie continues her studies with Jeffrey Yuen, an 88th generation Daoist priest who was a powerful influence and teacher during her four years in school. Additionally, she continues learning from her instructors at Daoist Traditions. Cissy Majebe, Sally Robinson, Weixing Zhao of Asheville, NC and and Connie Ross, MD of Tryon, NC remain valued sources of knowledge and wisdom. Additionally, since leaving school Debbie has trained with Dr. Richard Tan who specializes in treating acute and chronic pain and Lorie Dechar, a Five Element practitioner and successful author of Five Spirits.
Debbie was trained to treat all conditions and therefore does not claim to have one or two specialties. At the Cary Acupuncture Clinic we recognize and respect our patient’s personal and unique journey in pursuing their optimal health. It is our intention to support this journey whether the path is physical, mental or spiritual in nature.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine which is gaining popularity in the United States for the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
Disposable, sterile, thin (hairlike), solid, stainless steel needles are inserted into specific points on the body. In Chinese these points are called jie or ‘neural nodes’. The stimulation of these nodes affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Acupuncture triggers the release of the body’s internal chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins, which are known for their pain relieving benefits. If you have pain that is lingering or has not been treated by other modalities then acupuncture offers a time tested, reliable method of pain relief.
The Balance Method of Acupuncture
The practitioners at the Cary Acupuncture Clinic are highly trained in a different style of acupuncture. This method is over 2,000 years old and was developed using the I Ching, one of the oldest books in the world. This method has several names including ‘I Ching Acupuncture’, ‘The Balance Method’, or ‘Distal Point Acupuncture’. Regardless of the name, the effects are nothing short of miraculous.
The majority of the time the acupuncture points used are on the ears, from the elbows to the fingers and from the knees to the toes. A patient rarely has to remove their clothing and the treatments are efficient and extremely effective. Patients find the treatments very comfortable and frequently fall asleep during the treatment.
The Balance Method produces immediate results making it an invaluable treatment for pain.
Chinese Herbal Remedies are an extremely important and highly specialized component of Classical Chinese Medicine. Herbal remedies allow the individual to access healing on a daily basis while receiving periodic acupuncture treatments. It has a 2,500 plus year history, which is supported by present day scientific research.
At the Cary Acupuncture Clinic we feel it is imperative to treat the person, not the disease. Consequently, herbal formulas are individualized. Four patients with the same symptom of headaches would very likely be prescribed four different herbal combinations, each direct to the specific source of the headache.
Cary Acupuncture Clinic offers a complete raw and granulated herbal pharmacy. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality of herbal products available. The companies who supply our clinic herbal products maintain international certification by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification from the Commonwealth Department of Health, Australia. These certifications are for the manufacture of pharmaceutical grade products. They set the industry standard to ensure safety and effectiveness within product lines.
Herbal treatment length will depend on the nature of the complaint, its severity and how long it has been present. Herbal prescriptions are not included in the treatment fees. There is an additional fee for herbal prescriptions.
Herbal consultations without an acupuncture treatment are available. The herbal prescription fees are not included in the consultation fee.
Chinese Face Reading is based on an ancient branch of Chinese medicine. References to face reading can be found in texts dating back to 600 B.C.E. Original face readers were highly educated Taoist Monks whose role was to be a combination of priest, healer and compassionate advisor.
In ancient China, physicians were not allowed to touch women during the diagnostic process so reading the face became an important skill set to have. Chinese medicine has long believed that emotions are an important factor in health. The mental and physical selves cannot be separated and therefore, the same information read on your face to investigate the condition of your body can also reveal the qualities of your inner emotional nature.
At the Cary Acupuncture Clinic, we believe that Chinese face reading can not only be used to evaluate your health but will also provide profound insights into the patterns of emotions you struggle with, your personal strengths and challenges, the type of work you will be drawn to and much, much more. Face reading can help provide the answer to two fundamental questions for your life: Who are you? and What is your calling?
Whether you are curious about what the reflection in your mirror can tell you or maybe you are curious about what your face conveys to others a personal face reading has potential to offer insights into how you see yourself and how you are moving through your life.
