A Distinguished 125-Year History
The Cambridge Homes has a rich tradition of service to local seniors. The not-for-profit organization was established in 1887 by a group of Cambridge citizens (including Alice Longfellow, the poet’s daughter) to create a residence for elderly men and women. The first "Home" was quickly outgrown and in 1898 our current building, now a historic landmark, was built. It was opened the following year in a ceremony presided over by Charles William Eliot, president of Harvard University. As time passed an infirmary was added, and in 1997 we reopened as an assisted living residence following a complete renovation which modernized our building while preserving its historic charm and original architectural details.
The Cambridge Homes’ mission continues to be carried out today by an active nine-member Board of Directors and 50 Incorporators, all from the Cambridge, MA community. The Homes has successfully maintained its original charitable purpose by assisting residents with limited means through an endowment fund and providing support and companionship through an active Friends’ Committee. Volunteers from the Cambridge area serve on the Friends’ Committee sponsoring a variety of in-house programs for residents, such as play-reading groups and monthly teas, and are actively involved in the enhancement of The Homes’ two libraries, which have more than 900 titles. The Friends also act as medical escorts for residents, driving them to and providing companionship during physician visits.
