“I think we all know that people do better and stay healthy longer if they are able to have their needs addressed in their own home,” Dr. Nielsen says. “Furthermore, this doesn’t even begin to address the decreased risk of infection if people can minimize their time in a hospital or rehab facility.” In the last year of their lives, Tyghe’s grandparents both became ill unexpectedly, leaving his mother to become their primary caregiver.
“We were fortunate in that my mom is a registered nurse,” he says. “Even with her professional skills and experience, it was a difficult time. I knew it must have been exhausting for her, even though she was certainly qualified and it wasn’t out of her comfort zone to address their day-to-day needs.
