About

Tom Clark, Dr.

Dr. Clark specializes in 'experiential psychotherapy' wherein a person works with his/her experience of their distress to achieve resolution and insight. The popular 'symptom resolution' approach (the primary focus of cognitive behavioral therapies) which most insurance policies will cover (exclusively) has its place and is sometimes a good place to start. Dr. Clark believes that our experiences, though they may sometimes be painful, are opportunities to mature and develop deeper understandings of both ourselves and others. This approach achieves symptom resolution though the approach to symptom relief is not the primary goal and is less direct.
Dr. Clark has worked with marriage and partner relationships in north central North Dakota for over 25 years. His approach, similar to his approach in adult psychotherapy, focuses on ways in which partners can understand and orient toward one another while maintaining their personal sense of self. It focuses on how our behavior within a relationship must reflect our authentic beliefs and values and examines ways in which partners can meaningfully integrate their lives. While Dr. Clark very rarely recommends separation or divorce, he does not believe that all relationships are capable of healthy functioning and he does not believe that all relationships must remain intact.
Dr. Clark works to help individuals and couples achieve their own personal goals. He will offer orientations, perspectives and options for them to consider and he will inform them of research findings in human nature and of the likely consequences of certain approaches or dispositions. He does not believe people want to be told how to live their lives and he refrains from interventions which have that tone.
Family members can often encounter interpersonal conflict as adults. It is gratifying to maintain positive relationships among adult siblings and elder parents. This is a challenging area of increasing concern. Dr. Clark loves children, but does not believe that one person can be good at everything. Child and Adolescent Psychology is a demanding area of work by itself. Dr. Clark believes his skills and abilities are most appropriately practiced with adults.
Dr. Clark has a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Philosophy and Social Theory with a minor emphasis in group communication. He holds a Master of Arts in Religion with major emphases in Philosophy of Religion and Theology. He has completed the equivalent of a Bachelors degree in Psychology and holds a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology. He is licensed in both Clinical Psychology and also as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
