Javier Roman-Gonzalez, MD is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, practicing with South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants.
As an adolescent, Dr. Roman-Gonzalez watched his mother, a nurse in the OR, and knew he never wanted to do anything other than practice medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1991. He then completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where, during his cardiology rotation, he was inspired by Dr. Paul Walter who started the arrhythmia/electrophysiology service there in 1980. "From that moment I was hooked. It was intellectually and technically challenging—the perfect combination for me.”
Dr. Roman-Gonzalez completed his cardiology fellowship at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and his fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
His greatest passion is the treatment of atrial fibrillation, notably in the advancing field of minimally-invasive catheter ablation. He also performs left atrial appendage occlusion procedures with the Watchman device to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who need an alternative to warfarin.
He sees patients in all four South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants' offices: San Antonio (Heart Plaza One), Boerne, Kerrville and Fredericksburg; and also at Methodist Hospital | Texsan.
