Met with Dr. Rao for a consultation about a VP shunt for my 77 year mom. Consult set-up after a very successful lumbar puncture with fantastic temporary relief from my mom's Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) Met with Dr. Rao to discuss the shunt surgery and left feeling uneasy about the entire procedure/consult. Decided to make a second consult with Dr. Rao just to clarify and make sure this was the best option for mom. After meeting with Dr. Rao again we both felt zero support and both agreed Dr. Rao had no bedside manner, absolutely no comfort or personal thoughts about what she would recommend. She would only discuss what the complications could "possibly" happen without any reassurance or compassion on the positive outcomes. Mom was literally terrified at the possible "complications" that could have happened instead of also understanding the possible benefits. Dr. Rao even told my mom when I left the room that I was trying to persuade my mom and that we should meet with her a THIRD time so she could talk to both of us and also talk to mom "alone", making me feel like I'm not my mom's biggest supporter and always want mom to have the final decision on her future care. I love my mom more than anything and have always been there for her but it broke my heart to see a doctor question my intensions. I am very thankful mom is willing to get a second opinion and I pray she gets the support and honest feedback she needs to make the best decision. Prayers for a bright future for mom!

Dr. Abigail Rao is an outstanding Neurosurgeon. She shows strong traits of leadership and empathy for her patients. I began falling and within one week went from limping, to using a walker, to requiring a wheelchair. At that point I could not stand or walk. I went to Norton NeuroScience Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville for help. Triage there immediately ordered MRI of the Cervical Spine where Spinal injury presented as compacted #’s 2,3,4 and 5 vertebrae and absence of spinal fluid in those areas. I was admitted on a Saturday and a call went out for a neurosurgeon to see me and Evaluate. Dr. Rao volunteered her weekend (where others did not). She diagnosed the root of the problem (where others had not), she explained the Injury to my spinal cord in the simplest of terms and s injury to my spinal cord in the simplest of terms and she recommended surgery the very next day - Sunday (Doctors and their surgical teams mostly avoid surgery on the weekend which is understandable because the must List and recuperate to be in top form)! But my injury was severe enough to warrant immediate action. A friend of ours told us that it was best to deal with Spinal ASAP because it has potential turn you into a quadriplegic. We thank God for our good fortune of having needed Neurosurgery on a weekend when Dr. Abigail Rao was the only specialist with the courage and who cared enough to sacrifice her Saturday, Sunday and beyond to call together a first rate surgical team to perform a laminectomy so I could once again walk!
