About
Neville Fernandes
Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?
I chose to specialize in Gastroenterology because it is a rapidly developing specialty. The procedural aspects and use of technology are interesting to me and also present a challenge. Knowing how prevalent gastrointestinal disorders are also made the field appealing to me because it allowed me the opportunity to intervene in critical situations and impact patient’s lives in a positive manner. I also had a strong interest in liver disease and transplantation.
Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?
Besides the academic challenge, being able to be procedural and intervene in emergency situations has always been both an interest and a challenge. Particular fields of interest include biliary endoscopy, deep enteroscopy/double balloon enteroscopy, colon cancer, Barrett’s esophagus/ ablation and liver disease/transplantation.
Where did you study?
Medical school: University of Zimbabwe, Residency: Mt Sinai/Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland OH, Hepatology/Transplant: Cedars Sinai/UCLA, Los Angeles CA, Gastroenterology: University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio TX, MBA/Healthcare: Northeastern University, Boston MA.
What certifications do you hold?
Medical Doctor, Masters in Business Administration, Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, trained in Transplant Hepatology.
What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?
I cherish any “free time” together with my wife and two sons. We are active and involved in church activities and love vacationing and spending time together. I am also an avid basketball fan, especially NBA and NCAA, and will seize any opportunity for a round of golf. I am a “sports nut” in general.
Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?
I am a current member of the Governing Board at TDDC and the Governing Board at Las Colinas Medical Center. I was also the Chief of Staff at Las Colinas Medical Center (2010-2014) and Chairman of Performance Improvement, Las Colinas Medical Center (2006-2010).
