About
Michael Mendelson
Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?
My mentor, Hyman Zimmerman, MD at George Washington University, inspired me to pursue a career in gastroenterology. At the time I entered medical school, Dr. Zimmerman was a well recognized hepatologist doing clinical research in liver disease. He introduced me to exciting new advances in infectious and drug-induced liver toxicity.
Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?
I have great interest in the new modalities of treatment for inflammatory bowel disease and infectious liver disease.
Where did you study?
Undergrad: Long Island University, Masters: Rutgers University, Medical School, Internship and Residency: George Washington University, Gastroenterology Fellowship: University of Colorado.
What certifications do you hold?
Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?
Sailing has been a passion of mine ever since I was introduced to it during my time in DC, when I had access to the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. When I’m not sailing, my wife and I are avid patrons of the arts. We enjoy the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas and Kimball Art Museums. In addition to that, we love to travel. The best excursions are those when all of our children and grandchildren can be together.
Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?
In 1970, I was inducted as a member of Smith Reed Russell Honor Society. Also, after my fellowship training, I entered the United States Air Force and was transferred to Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. There, I was promoted to Major and served as Chief of Gastroenterology from 1976 – 1979.
