About
Edward Coles
Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology allows me to develop long term relationships with many interesting patients from all walks of life. Unlike most surgical fields, I see people at varying intervals of their lives. I can utilize the intellectual side of Internal medicine in taking a history and doing a physical, formulate a differential diagnosis then do a procedure to diagnose and treat many conditions. It is a very technical field that is always changing and innovating.
Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?
I love all aspects of this field, and I particularly enjoy teaching the many skills needed to be a competent Gastroenterologist. Prevention of cancers, Cirrhosis, etc. is particularly appealing. It is always satisfying to take a critically ill patient in the ICU and do a minimally invasive procedure to turn them around in minutes. Just a few years ago they would have needed a huge operation or even passed away.
Where did you study?
Undergrad: University of San Diego, Medical School: Georgetown University School of Medicine, Internship and Residency: Letterman Army Medical Center, Fellowship: Brooke Army Medical Center.
What certifications do you hold?
Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Fellow in the American College of Gastroenterology and Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?
We enjoy traveling together, fishing, hiking and hunting. We spend a lot of time at our ranch outdoors. We volunteer at our church and are active in the soup kitchen.
Do you have any special honors or recognitions in your medical career that you would like to share?
I have been named Super Doctor as a top Texas Physician by Texas Monthly Magazine for many years. Likewise, I have been named a Top Doctor in Austin area for many years by Austin Monthly Magazine. I was awarded Jr AOA in medical school. My favorite awards were given to me in my training years as the top over graduate from all training programs in the medical center in San Francisco and Top resident teacher award given by the intern class of the medical center.
Do you fluently speak any other languages in addition to English?
Spanish.
