About

Paulo Selber

Paulo Selber, MD, is an internationally recognized specialist in the operative and non-operative treatment of orthopedic conditions in children and adults living with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders. His practice leverages the latest surgical techniques and diagnostic tools – including 3D gait analysis – to plan and execute the appropriate “orthopedic surgical dose” and treatment programs to improve the lives of his patients. For over 25 years, Dr. Selber has exclusively dedicated his practice to caring for patients with cerebral palsy and neuromuscular conditions, initially in Brazil, then in Australia and now at the Weinberg Family CP Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr Selber is a tireless advocate for evidence based orthopedic approaches to advance the standard of care for the children and adults he sees.
As Director of Gait Recovery for the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center, Dr. Selber oversees a multidisciplinary team that collaborates with patients and their families to integrate gait analysis tools and technologies to best inform lifetime care decisions. He is a vocal advocate for the adoption of gait analysis as a prerequisite for any orthopedic surgical intervention designed to improve mobility. Backed by evidenced-based research, the use of gait analysis is a key tool in Dr. Selber’s orthopedic practice. Gait analysis not only precisely quantifies and qualifies the gait abnormalities seen in many patients, but it also allows providers to track post-surgical outcomes with great accuracy. He has trained at and collaborated with seven gait analysis laboratories across the United States, Brazil, and Australia, and has helped establish premier centers of excellence in Sao Paulo at The Association for Assistance of the Disabled Children (AACD), and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.
A native of Brazil, Dr. Selber attended medical school at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas in Sao Paulo and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Institute Jundiaiense and Paulo Sacramento Hospital in Jundiai. After fellowship training in neuromuscular diseases at the Association for Assistance of the Disabled Child (AACD) in Sao Paulo, Dr. Selber went on to complete fellowships in pediatric orthopedics, cerebral palsy, and gait analysis at Children’s Memorial Hospital with Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, and Gillette Children’s Hospital with the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, MN.
In addition to his orthopedic practice, Dr. Selber has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and frequently presents lectures at prestigious regional, national, and international conferences. He has had the honor of teaching on matters of childhood onset and adult disabilities, gait analysis, and their orthopedic treatments at various universities and community institutions around the world. Dr. Selber's research focus includes long term outcomes of orthopedic surgical interventions in patients with cerebral palsy, biomechanics of normal and pathological gait, surgical dose in cerebral palsy, crouch gait in cerebral palsy, and other neuromuscular disorders.
