Dr. Joseph C. Carmichael is a board-certified UCI Health colorectal surgeon who specializes in laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgical approaches to treating diseases of the colon and rectum.
Carmichael started the first robot-assisted rectal surgery program in the state of Missouri and went on to perform the first robot-assisted rectal cancer resection in Orange County after joining UCI Medical Center. His clinical and research interests include the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of recurrent or advanced colon and rectal cancer, complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders and anorectal disease.
He serves as chief medical officer for UCI Health and leads the UCI School of Medicine's Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He also is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and participates on numerous national committees.
Carmichael earned his medical degree at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia. He completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the UCI School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital and University of Illinois, Chicago Medical Center.
