Stephen Kocaj
Stephen M. Kocaj, MD has expertise in orthopaedic sports medicine surgery and orthopaedic trauma surgery, with a special focus on knee ligament reconstruction, arthroscopic shoulder surgery and fractures repair of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. His training and expertise allow him to provide comprehensive care for athletes, including those who participate in professional, collegiate, high school and recreational sports.
Dr. Kocaj’s professional experience includes Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Emory University Hospital and Orthopaedic Trauma Attending at Atlanta’s Level -1 Trauma Center, Grady Memorial Hospital, where he taught and supervised the Emory orthopedic residency program. He has also served as an assistant team physician for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team, Jacksonville State Gamecocks football, Birmingham Barons minor league baseball team and Georgia Tech’s football and men’s basketball teams.
While in his fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Kocaj received specialized training in minimally invasive reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, as well as meniscus and collateral ligament repair in the knee. In addition, he received advanced training in arthroscopic shoulder surgery, focusing on rotator cuff and labral repair. Dr. Kocaj trained with some of the world’s top shoulder and knee surgeons.
Dr. Kocaj’s research interests are primarily devoted to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and treatment of rotator cuff injuries in the shoulder. He has co-authored and presented several articles on these research interests both locally and nationally. He is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopic Association of North America, and the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award for his outstanding care and services, including bedside manner, approach to patient visits, availability for appointments and the courtesy of his office staff.
Dr. Kocaj is presently Head Team Physician for Fairleigh Dickinson University’s athletic programs and is the team physician for Westfield High School Football.
A member of the Middlebury College football and men’s lacrosse teams, Dr. Kocaj has participated in athletics since his youth and understands the importance of accurate, effective medical interventions that improve an athlete’s ability to perform at his or her highest level.
Dr. Kocaj is a native of Westfield, New Jersey. When not working he enjoys fishing, playing lacrosse and tennis. He is a US Lacrosse certified coach and currently coaches boy’s youth lacrosse in Westfield.
