About
Dr. Scott holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Baylor University and a Master of Science in molecular cell sciences from the University of Memphis. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis and then completed his residency in General Surgery at Greenville Health System. He went on to complete a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Cincinnati. After serving on the University of Tennessee Knoxville University Medical Center faculty as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, he returned to the Greenville Health System, joining Bariatric Solutions, now known as the Prisma Health Weight Management Institute. His clinical practice and academic work are concentrated primarily on bariatric surgery. The scope of his research has centered new technology and comorbidity reduction as well as studies on access to bariatric care.
In addition to his duties with Prisma Health, he serves as an at-large member of the Executive Council and has previously served as the president of the Bariatric Society of the Carolinas, Chairman of the ASMBS Program Committee, Chairman of the ASMBS Access to Care Committee and member of the South Carolina Medical Association Childhood Obesity Taskforce. He is currently the representative for the ASMBS in the American Medical Association House of Delegates and sits on the board of directors for the ObesityPAC and the Obesity Action Coalition. He also serves on the Question Writing board for the Focus Practice Designation Committee for the American Board of Surgery. He is an editorial board member for Surgery for Obesity and Related Disease. Dr. Scott is board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery, a Diplomate for the American Board of Obesity Medicine and remains active in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Southern Surgical Association. He is a fellow of the ACS and the ASMBS.

Dr. John Scott is a Clinical Professor of Surgery with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Greenville and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Director for the bariatric surgical program of Prisma Health.
