About Sara Nurse practitioner Sara L. Utz has wanted a career in medicine since fourth grade. “I told my parents I wanted to be a doctor or nurse. I always enjoyed helping people.”
Sara now helps people in urgent care. “I enjoy treating a variety of illnesses and conditions. This specialty allows me to treat various health conditions at any age,” she explains. “I listen to patients’ stories and look for answers to help them feel better.”
Sara received her master’s degree in nursing from Goshen College. She has practiced nursing for more than 17 years and has been part of the Beacon family for two.
“Everyone I meet who works at Beacon has been kind and compassionate about providing the best care possible to the patients they serve.”
This suits Sara, who has endless compassion for her patients. “I listen to my patients and do the best job I can to treat their illness and get them back to feeling good.” This empathy is clear in her practice philosophy. “I treat others the way I would want to be treated or the way I would want one of my loved ones to be treated.”
She does this by listening. “Listening can tell you so much about your patients and their needs,” she clarifies. “By actively listening to the patient, they feel you care about them and why they are seeking treatment. When your patient feels cared for, they are going to follow your recommendations.”
In her own words Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My mom is my biggest role model. She worked very hard to provide for my brother and me. She was driven and inspired me to never give up on my dreams.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? My first job was babysitting at about 12 years old. I remember how much I loved the little kids. Seeing their imaginations and curiosity was really neat.
What are your hobbies, interests? I like to walk, shop and spend time with family. My hobbies would be decorating my house and painting.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased), who would it be and why? My dad, who passed away 10 years ago. I miss him very much and wish all of my kids could have met him.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love my family and enjoy spending time with them. They are growing so fast!
