He later obtained a master degree in biotechnology and dedicated three years to conducting research in esophageal cancer prevention. After graduating from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, he completed both a general surgery residency and an advanced GI/minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center.
