Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare: I wanted to save lives, and in particular, to save people from disability from neurological problems. I knew that I wanted to be a neurosurgeon since I was 15. It is a great privilege to be a doctor, and a greater privilege still to be a surgeon who can help restore full life and function. What I want my patients to know about me: I believe that surgery should only be done when clearly necessary, and then only the minimal operation that will be effective and durable, through the smallest incision that can provide good access. On the other hand, it is important to make a correct diagnosis, and not miss problems that if left untreated can result in paralysis and other disability.
