Dr. Coon is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah and co-directs the pediatric hospital medicine fellowship. His research focuses on identifying areas of medical overuse, with a particular interest in overdiagnosis, the accurate detection of abnormalities from which patients do not experience net benefit. While this concept is well described in the setting of adult cancer screening (prostate and breast cancer), little attention has been given to the possibility that overdiagnosis may be present among commonly diagnosed pediatric conditions. Dr. Coon"s research has uncovered new potential examples of pediatric overdiagnosis, including infant swallowing abnormalities detected by videofluoroscopic swallow study, coronary artery abnormalities among children with Kawasaki disease, and head bleeds and skull fractures among children with mild head injuries. Dr. Coon is the recipient of an Intermountain-Stanford collaboration grant, which provides funding for a randomized controlled trial evaluating the value of routine medical follow-up after hospitalization for bronchiolitis (NCT03354325).
