Dr. Stone received his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Utah and University of Utah School of Medicine. After completing postgraduate training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Duke University, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship training grant from the Pediatric Scientist Development Program where he completed work in developmental molecular genetics. His basic science research work from both his undergraduate and post-doctoral training resulted in several publications. Dr. Stone left academic medicine for several years to pursue a private medical practice in adult and child primary care healthcare in rural Utah, returning in 2003 to the University of Utah School of Medicine on the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics. Since returning to the University, Dr. Stone has provided clinical care to hospitalized children at Primary Children’s Medical Center as a pediatric hospitalist. Dr. Stone also resumed a research career developing skills as a clinical and health services researcher through additional training including earning a masters of science in clinical investigation and completing the advanced training program in quality improvement at Intermountain Healthcare. Dr. Stone is currently a Translational Comparative Effectiveness Research scholar. Through these efforts, Dr. Stone has frequently presented research findings at national meetings, and has published additional scientific articles. Dr. Stone is a co-investigator on 4 federal and private grants studying aspects of quality improvement dissemination, asthma care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, improving care of children with medical complexity, and is now working on comparative effectiveness studies utilizing large national databases. Dr. Stone was also significantly involved in initial development of the physical diagnosis introduction to the University of Utah medical school undergraduates as part of the new curriculum implemented in the fall of 2009, and has been awarded teaching recognition from both the pediatric residents and the undergraduate medical class.
