My father died of heart disease when he was just 55 years old. After that, I always wanted to be a cardiologist, to keep this from happening to other people. To me, it is the most interesting field in medicine. I graduated from Aleppo University Medical school in 1982 and came to the U.S. in 1983 to continue my medical education. In 1991, I completed my cardiology fellowship at the University of Illinois in Chicago. As a board-certified physician in internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine I joined the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and later on moved back to a teaching hospital in Chicago.
