Dr Assar earned a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering science from the University of Texas at Austin. He then attended the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, where he received the Gold Headed Cane Award, the highest honor given by faculty and classmates to a student who exemplifies the qualities of a true physician. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He then went on to Duke University Medical Center for fellowship training in cardiovascular disease and one year of his cardiac electrophysiology fellowship.
